While traveling in Costa Rica violent situations are not common as in other countries. So you can enjoy your visit, Ocotea Tours & Transfers offer a list of advise so you can make this a pleasurable one:

  • In case of an emergency please call 911
  • Schedule your trip in advance, by selecting routes that you will visit. Make sure you carry a map.
  • If you have children, avoid letting them unsupervised, especially smaller ones.
  • Wait for the bus in well-lit places and preferably with other people.
  • Walk in safe places and do not take lonely shortcuts.
  • If you are a victim of crime in any way, remember:  “Your life comes first; so do not attempt to offer resistance.
  • It is recommended to travel with a photocopy of your passport and place the original and airline tickets in a safe place.
  • If you are going to use public transportation (bus, taxi, etc.), travel on public roads or visit places like fairs, shops or local walks, do not carry valuables.
  • If you take a taxi, it is recommended to use the labeled ones; this indicates that there is a company behind the service.
  • When walking, you have to be alert of all things around you and avoid crowds.
  • Keep informed a friend or family about your traveling plan and itinerary.
  • If you visit a restaurant it is recommended to place bags, backpacks and purses where you can see them, do not leave them on the floor.
  • The local currency is the colon and the typical exchange currency is the US dollar.
  • If you go to the bank to withdraw a significant amount of money, bring a friend or family member with you.
  • Try to go with someone when shopping, walking or any activity in public places.
  • Do not leave your wallet unattended.
  • The shops, restaurants, hotels and others, accept local currency, U.S. dollars and credit cards.
  • It is recommended to use low denomination money, since USD $ 50 and USD $ 100 are usually not accepted due to the possibility of falsification.
  • Look for the Banks schedule before visiting them.
  • Investigate and take appropriate clothing for the weather during your visit.
  • In our country we have drinkable water in most places, be sure to check this in every place you visit.
  • According to the Costa Rican legislation sexual harassment, commercial sexual exploitation of children and adolescents, as well as the usage of illegal substances are punished by the Costa Rican law.
